Why I don't read newspapers as often as I should

Having previously been quite an avid reader of newspapers I have found myself doing so less and less in recent times. Aside from the odd cursory glance through the Irish Independent or Irish Times I really haven't sat down and read a newspaper cover to cover in sometime. Now this is terrible if, like me, you like to keep abreast of what is going on in the world and to be able to form well-informed and educated opinions on current affairs. I do still watch the news on television and of course I have remained faithful to current affairs programmes and informative documentaries so I'm not completely ill-informed.

So why don't I read newspapers as much anymore? The simple answer is that I just got fed up with all the bad news, the doom and the gloom.

Its impossible to open any newspaper without reading about numerous human tragedies; murder, rape, illness, genocide, racial tension....... the list is endless. I am trying to get back into my stride but honestly some days its just too depressing even taking into account the other information one misses out on: business news, reviews, humourous anecdotes, happy events etc.
Don't know if I'm the only one who feels like this but I am going to make a conscious effort to read a newspaper cover to cover on a more regular basis once again.

PS I have finally worked out how to upload photos from the net directly to blog (so what I hear you techies say but I'm learning as I go along!) so at least this blog will hopefully be a little less bland from here on in!

I totally agree! And I'm a journalist! I have to read the papers for work and gosh, the amount of bad news is chronic.

Even worse is that I'm on the Garda press office mailing list so every morning when I open my email, it's FULL of releases from the cops about this accident, or that shooting, or the other violent incident.

Thankfully I work for a local paper, so we cover a fair amount of good positive news too concerning schools and community groups and local bands so not all papers are full of bad news, but I do find the national papers depressing.

Glad to hear its not just me Kaz! I will have to bite the bullet and get back into the habit of reading a daily newspaper cos I don't like not being as informed as possible, that said, I may ask for a prescription for Prozac to make it all seem better while doing so!

It's just the two of you. There are no other people out there who think that newspapers print too much bad news. But your point of view is still worth expressing. However when you die, your point of view will die with you. Then everyone will be on the same side.

Shame on you Curly K. What about the Radio? Why don't you listen to that?

Radio for education; TV for amusement.

PS How did you learn how to upload photos? I've been wanting to learn that ever since I was born a blogger.

Have you found Google Video? Red Mother is into that.

Yes, Paul, I know, shame on me. In my defence, I do try to keep abreast of the main news stories but I know I must improve.

Very funny, of all the people, in all the world, and you believe that Kaz and I are the only ones to think that there is a lot of doom and gloom in the newspapers - yeah right!!!

Paul, I was the exact same with regard to the photo thing. You can upload your own photos to Flickr which is a good website that will provide links for you photos.

However, like you, I couldn't work out how to take relevant photos off the net until the other day. I'm learning as I go along and find some of the more techy blogger sites just too technical for me.

So what you do is, when you find a photo on the web you want to upload, right click on it. This brings up the options from open link etc. down to a properties option. Double click on properties option. Then copy the address that comes up in the photos properties. When posting in blogger click on the photo symbol and it will bring up a box where you paste the photos address. Blogger then uploads the photo to your post.

Its actually very simple.

Thanks a million. I'm too tired now to take it all in but I'm delighted to have such a short explanation. I too find many technical people too hard for me.
