300,000 euros for loo with a view!

DUBLIN (Reuters) - A ramshackle public toilet could fetch 300,000 euros (205,000 pounds) -- the price of a new house -- if politicians in western Ireland get their way. The town of Lahinch reckons property-hungry buyers will snap up the dilapidated, out-of-order loo because of its great location -- a surfing beach on Ireland's rugged Atlantic coast.

"You could leave the toilet block and be in the sea in less than 40 seconds," local politician Martin Conway told Reuters, but admitted: "It's quite remarkable that an old toilet block would fetch 300,000 euros". The average cost of a home in Ireland, where house prices have gone up 15 percent in the past year, is 299,929 euros.

Local property auctioneer Nicola Leyden said the site, overlooking Ireland's best known surfing spot, was breathtaking: "It's probably the most sought after pee you'll ever take on the west coast of Ireland".

I have three loos in my house, wonder if anyone would take two off my hands?? Sure I only need one and as it doesn't look like I'll win the lotto anytime soon, I could do with the cash!

I think I've used that toilet. Don't remember it having that 300K euro feel about it though.

That toilet has not been used for ages. According to the Council, it'll be sold only if local politicians agree. They have to decide what use is appropriate for the site.

Lahinch is a great place. Do you know it? Down the road from Lisdoonvarna...

Colm: I don't think a toilet with a €300K feel about it exists, does it? The ones in my house have a decidedly €3 feel to them!

Omani: You really are determined that I go to Lisdoonvarna aren't you?

I'm not sure I'd call Lahinch Ireland's best known surfing spot - I thought it was Bundoran or Strandhill. But I digress.

Three Hundred Thousand Euro. Are they out of their minds? Personally if I were a surfer in Clare, I'd be campaigning for the council to do it up and put showers in there. Mental note: list of things to harrass political candidates about "facilities at beaches".

If someone even thinks of buying this I want the rights over their money. They have too much and don't know what to do with it. I on the other hand, do not have too much and I know exactly what I'd do with it if I did.

Winds: will have to bow to your subtantial knowledge on the best surfing, I was only quoting Reuters, wouldn't know one end of a surf board from the other.Like the idea of list of things to harass politicians about. You are right about someone having too much money but they'll buy it to try to change the use to dwelling is my feeling.

You may have three loos in your house, (a mansion no less by the sounds of it - there are four loos in my house one for each of the four flats) but can you be on the beach in 40 seconds?!?!

Redmum; tis far from a mansion just a 3 bed townhouse with the statutory downstairs loo and the market driven ensuite as well as the bathroom! Can't be on a beach in anything less than two hours from my house I'd say but I my bedroom window overlooks a beautiful lake and I'm still only five minutes from town!

Why don't you knock through to the other flats? ;-)

I would but I think the occupiers would be a tad annoyed. Maybe they wouldn't notice :)

Maybe they wouldn't, feck it; go do some property development! :-)

Lahinch is where the world record for most people on a single wave was set recently.

Jaysus, if I'd bought the toilets you could've sat on your loo and watched lots of people waving at me so!

who the heck bought the toilet? and are they nuts?
